The place holds a very important place in the history of the region. Located between two of South India's biggest rivers, it is a very fertile region and considered a prize by the kings in the ancient times.
The city has some very historic monuments like the fort itself, alongwith many Masjids built by the Adilshahi kings and the Nizams of Hyderabad. Most notable are the Ek Minar Masjid, Shahi Jama Masjid and Jama Masjid, besides scores of DargahsShrines of Sufi saints distributed accross the length and breadth of the city.
